Saturday was AHA Mead Day, so BOV decided to do the right thing and—you guessed it—make a mead. Though I have been home brewing beer for years, this was only my second batch of mead, but it is so incredibly simple to make I figured there was no reason not to go ahead and document it for you, my loyal readers. “Mead?”, you say- let me provide a wee background on the subject, since it seems so many are unfamiliar with this honey-wine, which at one time was held in the highest esteem but has since fallen into relative obscurity. Heck, even the lady I bought the honey from thought I was making ‘meat’ until I clarified.

In the heart of the West Side’s livliest commercial district, the Grant/Ferry area, you will find one of Buffalo’s quality beer sellers- Frontier Discount Liquor & Beverage. No doubt you are familiar with their signature white horse which has for so long stood vigil before the entrance, but perhaps you assumed that the inside held no secrets. Well, I don’t know about and so won’t speak to their selection of wine and liquor (as per NYS’ archaic laws, the wine & liquor store is technically separate from the beer & soda), but I can assure my readers that so far as buying craft beers in the city goes, they do an excellent job.

Or, “where to buy beer in the city.” This is the first in a small series of posts tacking where to get all that yummy craft beer we’re always talking about on Beer-O-Vision around town. Sure, avid beer-o-philes are familiar with Premier (and it’s high prices but impressive selection) and the many locations of Consumers (lately selling growlers, if you hadn’t heard), but neither of these stores (or their many locations, to be precise) fall withn the city limits proper. It’s really sort of hard to talk about buying good beer in WNY without mentioning them, but I have noticed a few less-well-known stores where I can always count on getting someting I like to drink, and, well… sharing is caring, I hear!

Anyone who has written—or really, even read—a blog can appreciate that it is a lot of work for one person to keep it updated enough to be dynamic and intersting on a daily basis. And if the principle writer also has his hands in a number of other cookie jars (being a new dad, teaching, Beer-O-Vision video, &c.), well, it’s no understatement to say that a little help doesn’t hurt. The Buffalo News is reporting today (24th June, 2007) about a local company, Niagara Dispensing Technologies, who have developed a new tap which cuts the time it takes to pour a beer by 75%. 75-frikkin-percent!!! As the article states:

“Pfffffht,” goes the machine, jetting beer into the cup and topping it with a quarter-inch of foam. The cup fills in about three seconds — about one-quarter the time it takes a conventional tap to do the job.

Considering how much we put into them, and of course, how much we like what we get out of them, you might imagine we’d give a little more respect to the humble beer glass. Jim Koch, owner of Samuel Adams certainly wants us to. Disparaging of the standard, straight-sided pint glass that dominates the American bar (and which is, frankly, best used only as half of a Boston shaker), Mr. Koch enlisted the help of scientists and engineers to design glassware optimized for beer.

This was the scene down at the Niagara Association of Homebrewer’s annual event, Brew On The River. The concept is very simple- Bill invites the club to kindly invade his driveway on Grand Island, overlooking the lovely Niagara River for a day of brewing, eating, drinking, and hanging out. It’s always a fun time, and it’s usually an excuse for the club to tackle some kind of crazy brewing project- this year was no exception.

Now, last year, three of us “new” members (shout out to Shawn and Joe here) essentially ended up with the dangerous (yet strangely gratifying) job of ferrying really hot rocks from the fire to the kettle for an authentic Steinbier…
