Another sailing excursion, another excuse to check out a canned beer. On this occasion, BOV decided to move away from the US micro scene for this packaging trend and to try instead a fine canned beer from Europe. Not Heineken, but you’re close: Belgium’s Wittekerke, a wit style beer. For a day under the sun, this turned out to be a great companion.

This beery weekend was finally the day of the long-planned Y.m.p. APA, of which the crafting consumed the majority of Saturday night while Mrs. BOV oversaw the very imp hisself. Whilst prepping for the brew day (read: “cleaning”,) I got a chance to fit in a beer I strongly suspect will be available on Aug 25th. As well, after a lovely Sunday stoll w/ Mrs BOV & Imp, I finally got to drink an excellent limited offering from one of my favorite left-coast breweries, Lagunitas (h.t. Pete B for alerting, and Mike at Coles for stocking it.) All that and some yardwork, too.

Canned beer is nothing new, of course, and in fact, canning technology was one of the things that underlay the consolidation of the industry in the 1950’s-1970’s. Pre-prohibition, all beer was bottled (or sold in growlers). When canning became a viable alternative, (thank you, American Can Company) the larger companies were able to implement it more rapidly- and because of the many advantages of canning over bottling (more on which below,) the macro-brewers were able to get their beer into ever more markets at prices that undersold the local competition, paving the way for the flurry of brewery closings that characterized the era.

In the comments to another post, a reader asked about Beer-O-Vision’s choices for summer beery gooodness. I made a quick recommendation (Anchor’s Summer Wheat), but I was already secretly potting to write this post, so I didn’t mention a particular style of beer that I think is a great choice for the summer: Berliner Weisse, or Weiße, if you prefer. If you’ve been reading me since the days I posted on Buffalo Rising, you’ll already know of my fondness for this style from this post and from this one. The former post discusses a classic example of the style, Berliner Kindl Weisse, while the latter post is about a regional take on the style from Custom Brewcrafters of Rochester. Today, even though today the local weather is somewhat less-than-summery-sun-and-heat, I’m going to discuss two other examples of the style.

Beer-O-Vision was down at Mr. Goodbar Wednesday night for the Goodbeer Club- but not shooting. We needed to catch up on Episode 3, and also want to tape the segments for Episode 4 in advance of the Goodbeer Club shoot, so that when we put in that unifying piece, all the other spots can just be dropped in for the full show. The upside? I got to kick back, enjoy the tasting, and chat a bit with some fellow enthusiasts including guest host Bill Metzger (Publisher of the Great Lakes Brewing News) and Paul Madson, owner of Alternative Brews. Of course, the very words “cream ale” mean one thing and one thing alone to a WNYer, and that’s surely Genesee. The staple, brewed continuously in Rochester, NY since 1960, is not generally thought of as especially craft-brewed, or upscale, but the cream ale style is an american original what predates all these new American mutants- “Imperial” everything, and “Oak-aged” everyhing, for example…
